Talismans and amulets made from Whitby jet

Pieces of Whitby jet are ideally suitable for use as talismans, touchstones and amulets and have been used as such by many magical practitioners, Wiccans, witches and therapists.

In the case of an amulet, the jet can be left mainly in its natural state, whilst a talisman might require the addition of other materials and further modification.

We supply suitable pieces of sea-washed jet which can be either polished to your specification (one side or both sides polished) or left in their natural state. The jet can be drilled to order so that the final talisman or amulet can be threaded onto a chain or thong.

Jet1-1Some practitioners prefer the jet to be wired so that small objects or appropriate significance and association can be attached to the wiring.

Why use Whitby jet? Whitby jet was sought after in Bronze Age times and used by ancient peoples for magical and spiritual purposes. Even the inferior soft jet found elsewhere in the world was seized upon and used for talismans and amulets for healing, divination and keeping away evil spirits.

According to The Book of Talismans, Amulets and Zodiacal Gems, by William Thomas and Kate Pavitt, {1922), jet “was also well known and used by all ancient nations, the Greeks dedicating it to Cybele, the goddess of all things necessary to life produced by the earth, wearing it for her favours and especially for protection to travellers by sea and land. Bœtius de Boot recommends it as a specific against nightmare, witchcraft, and melancholy apprehension”. Archaeologists have found a considerable body of evidence that jet, and particularly Whitby jet, was considered to be a special material associated with protection and power.

The Romans believed it to be a magical material and many Roman items have been found made from Whitby jet. An article in the journal “British Archaeology” refers to this wearing of jet and other similar materials as “Power Dressing”.

Jet is warm to the touch, unlike stone, light to wear and specimens left in a natural state are tactile and have striations and irregularities which make them particularly suitable for bonding to the wearer, as each one is unique and can never be duplicated.
